OLIVEWOOD STORY

HOW our OLIVE WOOD BEADS are harvested for our olive wood rosaries with individual handtied knots

Our Olive Wood Rosary Beads are handmade and have handtied knots between each individual bead.  Our olive wood beads are from wood of trees that have been bearing fruits in the Nativity town of Bethlehem since the time of Jesus.  Olive wood is a natural raw material that is produced from the prunes of young trees and the sprouts from the trunks of the old and unproductive trees.  It is an essential process for the healthier growth for the trees and generates environmental stability.  No trees were damaged or destroyed in the process of harvesting this olive wood.   Some of these trees are over 2000 years old!

All of our olive wood beads are made from the heart of the Bethlehem olive wood because the heart of the olive wood has darker grains and has the most color.  Each bead is totally hand-made fom the branches of the mysterious trees.  Using a very simple human invention carving tool an average bead carver can make around 500 beads a day but from there comes the second process of polishing the beads.  It takes 10 different stages before each bead is complete.  Both men and women work on the beads before they are ready to be used.

This wood working craft has been an honorable profession since history was first recorded.    Bethlehem olive wood is a local raw material from which mainly religious, historical articles are made. Bethlehem olive wood is heavy, dense and durable with distinctive colors that range in nuances of red and creamy pigments with irregular gray, brown and wild black lines.  All carvings made of this hard wood have a varying and smooth grain, making every piece extraordinarily unique.  As it ages, it will become darker and richer in color thus making it even more beautiful.

The olive tree is native to the Holy Land where it has been cultivated since ancient times.  It is a slow growing tree that fills during the first 7 years of it's life. Growing to heights ranging from 10 to 40 feet and reaching the age of 200, the trunk disappears and shoots develop at the base of the trunk that eventually grow into a new tree, hence the reputation as the immortal tree.

The olive tree plays a significant role in the life of the people of the Holy Land.  From terraced groves to woodcraft sculpture to fragrance and soap production, the olive tree gives pleasure to the senses, adds beauty, greenery and life to the rocky hills of the Holy Land.
